Update 1 August, by St Francis Chronicle: Circumstances surrounding the multi-vehicle crash in the Eastern Cape of South Africa, in which Warrant Officer Ricardo George Roberts from Mount Road Crime in Gqeberha, died, are still being investigated,
According to preliminary reports, the SAPS said the vehicles involved in the accident at Gamtoos Valley, near Jeffreys Bay in the early hours of 29 July, included two cash-in-transit armoured vehicles and a passenger vehicle.
Warrant Officer Roberts was declared dead at the scene after succumbing to his injuries. Two security guards from CIT vehicles sustained injuries and were hospitalised.
Preliminary reports from the Eastern Cape Department of Transport suggest the passenger vehicle and one armoured vehicle collided. The second armoured vehicle veered down an embankment to avoid being hit.
The Department of Transport and SAPS stress that the full circumstances still remain under investigation. The SAPS Employee Health and Wellness Services is providing psychosocial support to the bereaved family and affected colleagues.
The SAPS Eastern Cape management said it was deeply saddened by the death of Warrant Officer Roberts. The Provincial Commissioner of the Eastern Cape, Lieutenant General Vuyisile Ncata, conveyed heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased member.
“Losing a SAPS member is a painful reminder of the sacrifices made by our men and women in blue in serving our communities. We mourn his passing and stand with his family during this difficult time,” Lieutenant General Ncata said.
