Gunmen shoot two police officers – update

Edited by St Francs Chronicle: A brave and injured police officer shot yesterday afternoon in the New Brighton area of East London managed to call for help despite her injuries.

She was rushed to hospital by a responding officer and remains in critical condition in hospital. The policeman who had been with her in a white Isuzu bakkie at about 4.20 pm, sustained gunshot wounds to the upper body and head, and died at the scene.

Crime scene experts recovered several 9mm cartridge cases at the scene of the shooting incident. The SAPS says preliminary investigations reveal that two men who had been in a white Polo nearby, approached the Isuzu, and fired multiple shots at both officers.

The suspects then fled in the Polo towards the R61 highway in the direction of Port St John’s. The Polo was seen at the scene about two hours earlier.

A case of murder and attempted murder has been opened following the shooting incident. The two cops, who are from the Madeira Detective Unit in Mthathahe and their names will be released as soon as next-of-kin notification is completed.

The Provincial Commissioner of Eastern Cape Lieutenant General Vuyisile Ncata expressed sadness at the death and injury of the two officers. “We are devastated by the loss of a dedicated police officer and the critical injury of another who showed extraordinary bravery. I call on anyone with information to come forward so we can bring these cowards to justice,”Lieutenant General Ncata said.
