Fisherman patient evacuated at sea

A 50 year-old fisherman from Humansdorp suffering breathing difficulties was evacuated last night from the chokka fishing boat Sirocco, 17 nautical miles off-shore of the Kromme River, by NSRI St Francis Bay volunteer duty crew.

Paul Hurley, NSRI St Francis Bay station commander, said at 11 pm on 8 October local NSRI members were activated. Sirocco radioed Maritime Radio Services requesting assistance while making best speed towards Port St Francis.

NSRI St Francis Bay launched the sea rescue craft Spirit of St Francis II and on reaching the fishing boat, the patient was transferred onto to the sea rescue craft. The patient was treated for breathing difficulties en route to the private port and to the NSRI rescue base.

Paramedics from Private Care ambulance services continued medical treatment and the patient was transported to hospital in a serious but stable condition.
