Christiaan Basson, who started off as an amateur in the Pro-Am part of the Vodacom Sunshine Tour Origins of Golf, rose to first place in what was described as a most amazing feat – he trounced top professionals highly tipped to win.
This Cape Town golfer who plays at King David Golf Club and who produced the most amazing golf over almost five full days, walked off all smiles with the winning cheque for R103 025. He told St Francis Chronicle that even though he was an amateur he still wanted to win the prestigious main event, the Origins of Golf, and believed he could do it.
There were great cheers from the big crowd on the 18th and at prize giving next to the clubhouse – even the normally blasé TV photographers and top South African journalists loudly applauded.
Jeff Clause, CE of St Francis Links commented afterwards : “I was proud to represent St Francis Links at the Prize giving and humbled by the performance of our Champion, Christiaan Basson. He played real golf on one of South Africa’s sternest tests. I salute a true Champion! Cheers! “
