NSRI St Francis Bay today, 22 June, evacuated a skipper with a back injury from a chokka fishing boat 1 nautical mile off St Francis Bay’s private port.
The fisherman on the chokka boat, Pietro Leanja, was apparently thrown against the inside of the wheel house during an unexpected sea swell.
The NSRI St Francis Bay volunteer duty crew were activated at 2.05 pm and launched the sea rescue craft, Spirit of St Francis II, to meet up with the boat. The skipper was secured to a stretcher, transferred to the rescue craft and brought to Port St Francis from where he was taken by ambulance to hospital.
The fishing boat is currently docked at the port.
