A 47 year-old man died after being swept out to sea by rip currents at Port Edward yesterday, 11 January 2014.
NSRI Port Edward volunteer duty crew responded to a call out at 11.33 am to assist lifeguards at Main Beach.
When the NSRI crew arrived they found lifeguards had already rescued the man from the surf and CPR efforts were applied.
Netcare 911 paramedics and Medivac paramedics continued with advanced life support CPR when they arrived. After CPR efforts were exhausted the Port Shepstone man was declared dead.
The body was handed over to police and the Forensic Pathology Services. An inquest docket has been opened.
Family of the deceased man are being supported by Police.
