Three young men were taken ashore at by Durban NSRI volunteer duty crew after their Hobie Cat capsized.
“They had launched earlier from the Point Yacht Club Vetchies Beach Site and had capsized off-shore in rough sea conditions in a 40 knot wind.”
Clifford Ireland, NSRI Durban station commander, said today at 12.10 pm the sea rescue duty crew were activated by the Transnet National Ports Authority following eye-witness reports of an overturned boat about 3 nautical miles off-shore of Durban’s Port.

“Our sea rescue duty crew launched our sea rescue craft Megan II and found the Hobie Cat, with three males aged about 22, all from Durban, being assisted by the crew of an unidentified yacht alongside them. They were 1 nautical mile off-shore and the yacht may have towed them closer towards shore.
“They were taken on board our sea rescue craft and brought to shore safely and their Hobie Cat was recovered. One man was treated at our sea rescue base for mild hypothermia, the other two were not injured. All were released needing no further assistance.
