Billabong Pro Juniors at Seals end August
Surfing fans will be flocking to Seals Point at Cape St Francis at the end of the month when top South African surfing juniors compete in the Billabong Pro Junior 2012 surfing tournament.
Running from 31 August – 2 September this popular annual event will feature U16 Boys, U16 Girls, U14 Boys, U12 Boys, Pro Junior Men and Pro Junior Women in action, plus specialty events.
Top seeds in the Women’s Pro Junior division are Bianca Buitendag (George), Sarah Baum (DBN), Heidi Palmboom (DBN) and Tanika Hoffman (CT). JBay’s Tahra Uren and the Smith sisters, Emma and Gina, will put their hours training at Seals and local knowledge to good use at point break and could well surprise.
Slade Prestwich (DBN) and Mikey February (CT) are likely to be the main threats in the Men’s Pro Junior though JBay surfers Dylan Lightfoot and Steven Sawyer know the waves at Seals and could turn the tables.
According to the Billabong press release sent out yesterday, August and September are good months for surf in the Eastern Cape and there is a strong chance there will be excellent waves at Seal Point – one of the most consistent waves around.
Billabong South Africa Marketing Manager Chad D’Arcy, says he is looking forward to the event. “It’s great to have this contest in the Eastern Cape and I can’t imagine a better set-up than that at Seal Point.
“We have the best junior surfers in the country entered into the tournament and we’re stoked to be associated with junior surfing in this way.”
The contest is sanctioned by Surfing South Africa, the governing body of the sport in South Africa, while the Pro Divisions are sanctioned by ASP Africa. Citroën Port Elizabeth, VonZipper and DaKine proudly support the Billabong Pro Junior. Red Bull is in charge of energy, and Island Tribe is the official sunscreen sponsor.
