A 19 year-old Pretoria guy who was caught up in a rip current at 5 pm this evening at Eerstre Rivier Main beach disappeared under the waves and has not been seen since.
The boy’s 22 year-old brother was also caught in the rip current but managed to get to shore.
Despite searches and shore patrols by NSRI Oyster Bay and St Francis Bay volunteer sea rescue duty crews, who were alerted at 5.10 pm, there has been no sign of him. The SAP, the brother, university friends and members of the public also all joined forces to look for the young man. A police dive unit in Port Elizabeth has been alerted.
It appears the two brothers went for a swim this evening near to the Tsitsikamma Nature Reserve on a remote stretch of coastline. The NSRI reports that sea conditions are rough.
The brothers’ parents in Pretoria are being kept informed of developments. Names are not being released at this stage.
