JBay clr shot, four arrested

A Kouga Municipality councillor , Jacques Alexander, Ward 4, was shot several times in his back  in front of the municipal offices in Da Gama Street, Jeffreys Bay in the Eastern Cape this afternoon and taken to hospital .

Security personnel, law enforcement and the  SAPS successfully apprehended four suspects within 45 minutes and they were taken into custody. The first suspect was caught at a robot in Da Gama and three others were soon afterwards apprehended trying to escape further on the same street .

The SAPS said it is alleged that at about 3.45 pm the 49 year-old clr, was parking his vehicle on the street when a Ford Laser passed him. Two suspects alighted from the vehicle and fired shots at him. Alexander sustained multiple injuries to his back.

The two suspects split up and ran off in different directions but were swiftly arrested by police. The suspect’s vehicle was immediately circulated and it was spotted and pulled over while speeding in Da Gama Street.

Two suspects were apprehended by Jeffreys Bay law enforcement officials in possession of a suspected stolen vehicle. A 9mm pistol firearm was also recovered in a yard.

The suspects aged between 26-40 years are detained on charges of attempted murder.

Clr Alexander is said to be in a stable situation in hospital.

Provincial Commissioner, Lt Gen Nomthetheleli Mene, welcomed the speedy arrest of four suspects allegedly involved in the shooting of a DA councillor outside the municipal offices in Da Gama Street in Jeffreys Bay this afternoon.

Lt Gen Mene commended the excellent synergy by police and law enforcement officials in securing the speedy arrest of the suspects. “Soon after the incident, our members and law enforcement officials were in pursuit of the suspects and within minutes they were apprehended. I commend the excellent collaboration of those involved as we remain resolute in our pursuit of justice and maintaining the safety of our community,’ Lt Gen Mene added.
