Surfer passes on at Seal Point, Cape St Francis today

15 January 2024: A 30 year-old surfer from Cape Town passed on at Seal Point this afternoon.

According to a statement tonight from Colonel Priscilla Naidu of the SAPS, at 3.30 pm today, 15 January, members of St Francis Bay Station attended to a complaint about a surfer, whose name has been released as Daniel John Lurie from Tokai, Cape Town, who died at Seal Point, in Cape St Francis, in the Eastern Cape of of South Africa.

Col Naidu said it is alleged the deceased man was surfing when other fellow surfers noticed something was wrong with him. They took him out of the water and tried to revive him.

An ambulance was contacted and the man was later declared dead at the scene. The deceased had no visible injuries.
An inquest docket was opened.

Sarah Smith, NSRI St Francis Bay station commander, said at 2.45 pm yesterday NSRI St Francis Bay and Kouga lifeguards were alerted to a surfer reportedly requiring medical assistance at Seal Point, Cape St Francis.
NSRI prepared to launch an NSRI rescue craft while NSRI medics, NSRI rescue swimmers, Kouga Municipal lifeguards, EC Government Health EMS, REMS (Rapid Emergency Medical Services), Relay ambulance services, local security and CCP (Community Crime Prevention) companies and the SA Police Services responded.
At the scene NSRI members found a doctor was conducting CPR on a man assisted by lifeguards, family and public members.

NSRI medics and paramedics assisted with the CPR efforts on the scene. Despite extensive CPR efforts sadly the man was declared deceased.
