NSRI Jeffreys managed to capture a young, oily penguin near Kabeljous beach and take him to be cleaned and rehabilitated yesterday afternoon.
Riegaard Janse van Rensburg, NSRI Jeffreys Bay station commander, said the NSRI received the call at 12.37 pm from a local Sanccob representative asking for assistance in capturing the bird.
The penguin was first found by two joggers about 3 kms outside of Jeffreys Bay near Gamtoos River Mouth.
NSRI volunteers duty crew members drove to the area ina NSRI 4×4 rescue vehicle and found the penguin 4 kms from Kabeljous. The penguin was caught after numerous attempts.
The young penguin was taken to Jeffreys Bay and handed to the local Sanccob representative, who will assess, feed, clean and rehabilitate the bird.
The NSRI rescue operation was finished at 2.30 pm
Van Rensburg says the little penguin is in good condition and it expected to make a full recovery before being released back into the wild.
