Four armed suspects allegedly overpowered two employees at a petrol station in Kareedouw in the Eastern Cape, wounded a policeman and fled with cash and jewellery.
According to :t Gerda Swart of SAP Communications Uitenhage, the petrol station was in van Riebeeck Street and the incident happened at 2 am this morning, 7 April.
The alarm of the premises was activated and a private security company member responded to the alarm. While he was investigating on the premises, he was allegedly overpowered by the four suspects who then forcefully opened the safe of the company.
A police official from SAPS Kareedouw, noticed suspicious behaviour outside the business premises during his patrol of the area. As he approached the scene the suspects opened fire.
The police constable was hit in both legs and he drove away from the scene. The suspects jumped in the vehicle (White Toyota Hilux) of the security company and sped off. They fled with an undisclosed amount of cash and jewellery.
The vehicle was recovered, having been abandoned on the N2 later this morning. Kareedouw SAPS are investigating a case of business robbery and attempted murder. No arrests have yet been made and police are searching for the suspects. Swart said.
