Last night Port Elizabeth NSRI volunteer duty crew members evacuated an injured 54 year-old Filipino sailor from a boat 2 nautical miles offshore.
The sailor fell against a hatch on board and suffered a laceration to his head, plus an injured side of his body, with blunt trauma.
Ian Gray, NSRI Port Elizabeth station commander, said at 9.50 pm on 29 July, the NSRI crew launched the sea rescue craft Eikos Rescuer IV to go to the container vessel Shasta to evacuate the injured man. Earlier the NSRI PE had been alerted by the Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) following a request for medical assistance from Shasta.
On arrival the NSRI found the wounded man walking around and hoisted him off the ship in a harness. He was taken ashore and then transported to hospital in a stable condition by EC Government Health EMS ambulance for further treatment.
