NSRI Port Elizabeth assisted three fishermen on a rubber duck that experienced mechanical failure last night.
The incident happened offshore of St Georges Strand and NSRI volunteer duty crew were activated at 8.20 pm by the Transnet National Ports Authority to offer assistance.
Justin Erasmus, NSRI Port Elizabeth deputy station commander, said the NSRI crew members launched the sea rescue craft Eikos Rescuer IV and found the three fishermen had managed to get their outboard motor running. “We escorted them into the Swartkops River Mouth where they recovered their craft without incident and no further assistance was required,” Erasmus said.
“The men were commended for taking the necessary precaution of calling for assistance while making efforts to rectify the problem themselves.”
