Semi conscious Filipino sailor rescued by NSRI Port Alfred

A 55 year-old sailor at sea, suspected to be suffering from hepatitis, was taken ashore by Port Alfred NSRI on Saturday morning, 31 May 2014.

The patient was on board  a bulk carrier, MAR Caroline,  sailing from Argentina to the East with its next port of call being Durban. The carrier was 3 nautical miles offshore.

NSRI rescue medics were transferred aboard the carrier and medical treatment was rendered to the semi conscious man  from the Philippines, Juan Pretorius, NSRI Port Alfred station commander, said.  The patient was secured to a trauma board, lowered to a sea rescue craft and brought to shore from where an ambulance transported him to hospital.

The Department of Health and SAMSA (South African Maritime Safety Authority) authorised for the patient to be brought to shore and transported to hospital.
