Pilot dies in plane crash near Swellendam
A pilot died at lunch time today, 4 January, when his small plane crashed at an airfield near Infanta along the Breede River.
The pilot is believed to be from Swellendam according to NSRI .
NSRI says Witsand NSRI, the SA Police Services, WC Government Health EMS, Overberg Fire and The NSRI says Rescue Services, including a Working On Fire helicopter, and the Overberg Disaster risk Management responded at 1.16 pm today following reports of a light aircraft that crashed between Cape Infanta and Swellendam.
It is suspected, from reports, that the accident happened shortly after the light aircraft became airborne from the airfield. On arrival at the crash site the wreck of a light aircraft was found with the dead pilot.
It is believed that only the pilot was in the aeroplane at the time of the accident. The scene is under the authority of the SAP and it is NSRI’s understanding that the CAA (Civil Aviation Authority) has been activated.
