Kouga residents urged to save water!

Kouga residents are encouraged to use water sparingly so as to prolong supply.

Kouga Executive Mayor Booi Koerat said that while the dams were still relatively full, the levels were declining. Saving water now would help to prolong the availability of the current water supply until the next rainfall season.

“This is in essence a precautionary call on residents,” he said. “Our request is that residents aim to reduce their water consumption by at least 10%. This will help to delay the introduction of water restrictions.”

He said that no punitive measures would be taken against consumers who use water excessively at this time.  

“Should the dam levels continue dropping, however, there is a good chance that the Nelson Mandela Metro will introduce water restrictions again. Since we draw water for the same storage dams, Kouga would then have to follow suit,” he explained.

The dams levels, as measured mid September, are Kouga 93,2%, Churchill 73,2%, Impofu 84,6% and Loerie 33%. 

Five easy ways to save water

1. To check for possible leaks, close all taps on your property and check your water meter to see if it shows that water is being used.
2. Never pour water down the drain when there may be another use for it such as watering the garden or for cleaning.
3. Do not use running water to thaw meat or other frozen foods. Defrost food overnight in the refrigerator or use the defrost setting on your microwave.
4. Don’t let water run while shaving or washing your face. Brush your teeth first while waiting for the water to get hot, then wash or shave after filling the basin.
5. Avoid flushing the toilet unnecessarily. Dispose of tissues, insects and other similar waste in the trash rather than the toilet.
