The legendary waves of Jeffreys Bay will be the battlefield for the country’s top young surfers competitng for coveted team and individual national titles, green blazers and specialty awards in the Hurley SA Junior Champs next week.
Among them will St Francis Bay’s rising surf star, Crystal Hulett, who wll be surfing in the U18 category.
Scheduled for 25-29 September, the 17th annual edition of this premier Surfing South Africa (SSA) event features the best 17-and-under surfers who have qualified via cut-throat selection trials for their respective provincial teams. All the action will take place place in the high performance waves at The Point for the second successive year.
“Junior surfing is the future of our sport in South Africa and the South African Junior Champs forms an integral part of Hurley’s goal to turn our juniors into professional surfers and world champions,” says Hurley South Africa MD, Jevon Le Roux. “We are proud to be associated with junior surfing and everyone is looking forward to an exciting event in Jeffreys Bay.”
Hosts Eastern Province dominated last year’s event in their home surf, winning the team title for the first time and clinching three of the six individual SA titles at stake in the Under 17, U15 and U13 categories for boys and girls, along with three of the five special awards on offer.
This year teams from 2012 runners-up KwaZulu-Natal Central, 2011 champions Western Province, Southern KZN, Border, Boland, Zululand, Southern Cape and the SA Development Academy will be going all out in their quest to secure the Freedom Cup and individual national titles.
“The Hurley SA Junior Championships is the most important junior tournament on the South African calendar and Hurley’s support and commitment has turned it into a five star event,” says Robin de Kock, GM of Surfing South Africa (SSA).
“This is where our next generation of surfing stars get to strut their stuff and the fact that it will take place in Jeffreys Bay again this year adds to the stature and excitement for this special event.”
