NSRI retrieves Swedish guy’s kite board lost at sea

 NSRI Mykons found and retrieved a kite and board drifting a sea today off Langebaan.

There was no sign of the   kite surfer  but after a search a Sedish guy was found, who was pleased to get his equipment back before flying back to Sweden..

Gerard Brune, NSRI Mykonos station commander, said  yesterday evening, 25 February 2013,  volunteer sea rescue duty crew were activated following reports of kite boarder in difficulty off-shore in the Bay between Saldanha Bay and Langebaan.

 The sea rescue craft Gemini Rescuer II was launched and went in search of  the kite boarder. After  a search, a kite and board was located. 

“A search continued for a suspected missing kite boarder and investigations were launched at local kite boarding shops and at launch sites. While investigating we were told by a local kite board shop staff member that a Swedish man had abandoned his kite at sea and swum safely ashore.

The Swede, Sven Metlig, had apparently got into difficulty and went in search of someone to help him raise an  retrieve his kite and board from the sea.  Sven was reunited with his kite and board at the NSRI sea rescue base in Mykonos.

 “He claimed  he had been out on a final sail, before returning home to Sweden, when he got into difficulties before abandoning his kite and board. He is due to fly home to Sweden today, 26 February.”
