Review: By Bev Mortimer:
A special treat was in store for those who dined at Five Elements restaurant this evening (17 November) as Digby and The Lullaby gave an outstanding, captivating performance .
On piano and lead vocals, the young Rouchelle Hubsch (22) sang with deep emotion and crooning voice a variety of lullabies backed by highly talented guitarist and vocalist, Darren Peens.
Diners were kept spellbound by the pair whose intimate performance expressing warmth, tenderness and love was extremely moving, keeping everyone in the restaurant enrapt. The amazing happy rapport and affection between the two singers was highly visible and endearing – and the audience simply loved them.
Their haunting lullabies ranged from serious, to sad, to light-hearted and happy with diners joining in joyfully and clapping along with the latter. The soft yellow circle of light and other superb lightning enhancements added to the overall uplifting effect of the evening’s show.
St Francis Bay is Peen’s home town and he was delighted to be performing here with his ‘favourite singer in the world’. Rouchelle was happy that she and Darren also performed in her hometown as well – in the nearby Eastern Cape town of Uitenhage.
Digby and The Lullaby have just finished tracking their debut album in New York with producer Kieran Kelly (Angus and Julia Stone, Sufjan Stevens) they are aiming for an early 2013 release.
Live performances to date include shows at The Chaplin in Port Elizabeth, Googies in New York and the prestigious Hilton Arts Festival in Durban two years running – where extra seating had to be put in after their first performance. Ralph Piaden (the Fleur du Lys’ theatre manager) commented that they were “the most complimented act’ in his theatre throughout the festival”.
