The French yacht Tiki, with three frenchmen on board was towed into Richard’s bay harbour yesterdy by NSRI Richard’s Bay yesterday.
The yacht is understood to be accompanying the ARC ‘around the world yacht race’. Their last port of call Reunion.
The three men on board, , skipper Michelle Riou, 53, Thomas Pascal, 62, and Banbelier Michelle, 65,all from France, reportedly struck a whale two weeks ago sailing between Mauritius and Madagascar rendering the motor unusable. None of the men were injured.
On approaching Richard’s Bay under sail they requested NSRI, through the Transnet National Ports Authority, to assist to get them into Port. Cornell du Toit,station commander, said: “At 7.26 pm ( 10 November) NSRI Richard’s Bay volunteer sea rescue duty crew were activated following a request for assistance from the yacht, requiring to be towed into Port.
“Our NSRI Richard’s Bay volunteer sea rescue duty crew launched our sea rescue craft Spirit of Round Table and rendezvoused with the yacht 5 nautical miles off-shore of Richard’s Bay. A tow-line was rigged and the yacht has been safely towed into Port and berthed at the small boat harbour.
“The yacht may be moved to the Zululand yacht club later where the three crew men will effect repairs to the yacht’s motor.”
