Links Cup anthems and flag waving ceremony
In spite of the howling and icy wind, a large group of members of St Francis Links Golf Course gathered together to sing the national anthem of their country of choice and to celebrate the start of the Ryder Cup yesterday evening.
In true Cup spirit the proceedings started with the national anthems of all participating countries and the presentation of the teams. This flag-raising and national anthems ceremony was held in Jack’s Bar.
The Ryder Cup three days of match play golf, pitting the best professional golfers in the US against those representing Great Britain, Ireland and Europe, started yesterday.
And simultaneously it was also the start of the Links’ Cup, played by members in conjunction with the Ryder Cup (Medinah CC, Illinois) representing their country of heritage (or choice)!
Jack’s Bar resounded to the strains of several different anthems and members jovially sang along. Then the Betterball and Foursomes were announced in a jocularly way and there was much fun and laughter.
The Links Cup being held this weekend 28-30 September 2012 is a match play competition that features foursomes, betterball and singles. International team Captain, Peter McHugh returned to the Links again this year as Captain of the defending champions.
Jeff Clause is leading the South African side with pride and anticipates the home side will take home the medals provided again by member and internationally renowned medal maker, Colin Higgins.
