Booi Koerat expected to be Kouga’s new mayor

By: Bev Mortimer

The new mayor of Kouga is likely to be Booi Koerat, a previous Kouga mayor and the ANC’s current mayoral candidate.

While the ANC has the majority, the DA  opposition party has one councillor less than the ANC in Council . The DA has named Chimpie Cawood as its mayoral candidate.

Failing a majority vote by either party on Thursday 2 June 2011 in the  mayoral vote during the Council meeting in Humansdorp, the mayoral candidate names will be placed into a hat and the one drawn will be the new mayor.

The recent 2011 Municipal Election results for the Kouga Local Municipality (EC108) ushered in changes in Ward Councillors and there will also be a new mayor and changes to the exeucitve Committee.

The overall municipal results were: ANC 49.37%, DA 48.16% with independents and smaller parties making up the the rest. Of the 15 Wards in the municipality the ANC won 9 and the DA 6.
