JBay nanny arrested for shocking abuse & neglect of toddler

Edited by Bev Mortimer: The SAPS says a 59 year-old child minder has been arrested for alleged child neglect after a two year-old child was found suffering from open wounds on New Year’s Day in Jeffreys Bay.

The SAPS relates that, at about 4 am on New Year’s Day, the police were summoned to a complaint of an injured child with open wounds on her upper body at a house in Govan Mbeki Street, Tokyo Sexwale in Jeffreys Bay.

It is unknown how the child sustained the injuries as the nanny was allegedly under the influence of alcohol. The toddler was taken to hospital for medical attention.
The arrested woman is due to appear in the Humansdorp Magistrate’s court tomorrow, 5 January, and faces charges of child neglect and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.
Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Thandiswa Kupiso was shocked and said: “It is disturbing and shocking that priority was given to entertainment and liquor over the safety of a helpless child. The Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit will conduct a thorough investigation, with the involvement of the Department of Social Development.”
