Illegal immigrants arrested in SA-Lesotho cross-border raids

Edited by St Francis Chronicle The SAPS yesterday, 16 December, disclosed that a cross border operation ‘Naleli’ between SA and Lesotho from 8-12 December led to arrest of 32 undocumented persons for contravention of the immigration act.

Plus there were arrests for wanted suspects for crimes ranging from assault to business robbery, 13 suspects for the possession of drugs, including tik, cannabis and mandrax, and two suspects for possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
These suspects appeared or will still appear at different Magistrate courts within the three districts during the week. The Naleli operation was carried out by SAPS members from the Joe Gqabi , Alfred Ndzo and OR Tambo Districts . Operation Naleli is an undertaking initiative between South Africa and Lesotho with the objectives of the operation in prevention of cross-border crimes, including smuggling of contraband goods, firearms , Illicit drugs and undocumented persons.

Members from various units of the South African Police Service SANDF, Immigration and Environmental affairs embarked on the operation and intensified patrols with high visibility in hot spot areas within the three districts. The focus areas included checking of stolen vehicles, transportation of stock, possession of drugs and unlicensed firearms, the non-roadworthy vehicles, and drunken driving.
They visited scrap yards, spaza shops, second hand goods dealers and liquor outlets for compliance inspections. Police conducted roadblocks with the assistance of Traffics and 278 traffic fines were issued to the value of R177100.
Also during Naleli the following anti-crime successes were reported by the SAPS:

  • 9582 Vehicles persons and their luggage were stopped and searched.
  • A trailer stolen at Vanderbylpark was also recovered at the roadblocks and 9 Vehicles impounded .
  • Several fines were also issued regarding the animal identification act and stray animals impounded.
  • Several dangerous weapons, drugs, copper cables and even fireworks were recovered as found property .
    The Eastern Cape Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Kupiso, extended her gratitude to the units and external role players for their outstanding dedication and commitment in combating crime in the Eastern Cape. “The teamwork and tireless efforts were instrumental in ensuring safety in our societies and the successes on the operation,” she concluded.
