Car jacking attempt at G20 foiled

St Francis Chronicle: A carjacker was wounded yesterday evening, 21 November, during his foiled hijacking attempt .
The SAPS’ National Intervention Unit (NIU) said: “The brazen carjacker attempted to steal a vehicle, allocated to the G20 and which was transporting NIU members, who were conducting patrols in and around Johannesburg.”
The SAPS further said that while conducting patrols along Empire Road, the hijacker jumped onto the road and pointed a firearm at the driver. He did not know there NIU members in the vehicle.

A shot was fired at the suspect by one of the NIU members that hit the hijacker and wounded him on the upper body. Later it it was found that the ‘gun’ was just an imitation .

The wounded suspect taken to hospital under police guard. He will appear in court for an attempted hijacking charge when he is fit enough.

“A replica firearm is considered as a firearm if used in the commission of a crime, the SAPS said. “The possession of an imitation firearm with the intention to commit an offence, such as hijacking, as well as the pointing at a person, of anything which is likely to lead a person to believe that it is a firearm, constitutes an offence in terms of the Firearms Control Act, 2000 (Act No. 60 of 2000).”
