SAPS Eastern Province, edited: Julius Malema, the leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has been found guilty on five charges today, 1 October, in the East London Regional Court.
According to the SAPS in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa, the charges were first laid in 2018 at Mdantsane SAPS,following allegations that during the EFF 5th anniversary celebrations held at the Sisa Dukashe Stadium on the evening of 28 August 2018, Malema allegedly fired random shots from a firearm, from the erected stage or podium at Sisa Dukashe Stadium Mdantsane .

A criminal case docket of unlawful discharge of Firearm in a built-up area or public place, and recklessly endangering a person or property with the unlawful discharge of a firearm was registered for investigation. An immediate investigation was started and the matter was investigated and presented to the Senior Public Prosecutor for a decision.
The SAPS says the first trial date was on 27 November 2019 in the East London Regional Court. Both Malema and Adrian Snyman (Malema’s bodyguard) were released on bail until the matter was finalised today 1 October 2025.
Malema was found guilty on all 5 charges in the East London Regional court today. The Senior Public Prosecutor decided to prosecute Malema on the following charges relating to the Firearm Control Act 2000 Act 60/2000 the SAPS says:
- Statutory Unlawful Possession of a Firearm
- Statutory Unlawful Possession of Ammunition
- Discharge of a firearm in a building up area or any public place
- Failure to take reasonable precautions to avoid danger to person or property
- Reckless endangerment to person or property .
The SAPs says the other accused, Adrian Snyman, who had been charged with failure to take reasonable precautions to avoid danger to person or property; and for providing a firearm/ ammunition to any person not allowed possessing it, was found not guilty and acquitted on all charges today.
The case against Malema was adjourned and postponed to 23 January 2026 for sentencing at East London Regional Court, the SAPS adds.
