The SAPS in Makhanda in the Eastern Cape had to use stun grenades and rubber bullets to disperse violent crowds this morning, 31 August, who attacked several municipal buildings and damaged at least two of them.
Their destructive acts came after the Makana Local Municipality demolished structures allegedly erected unlawfully by protesters on a plot, known as Golf Course, in Joza in Makhanda.
The SAPS Police arrested two people, among them a councillor, on charges of contempt of court, trespassing, and conspiracy to commit public violence. The SAPS said this afternoon it is managing an operational response to public violence in Makhanda following a municipal land clearance operation this morning.
More arrests are imminent, as several law enforcement agencies are deployed to control the situation in Makhanda, the SAPS said.
The N2 highway is unaffected currently but the SAPS advises motorists to avoid non-essential travel to Makhanda.
