
Abalone worth R340k seized by PE cops 0
On Friday this weekend, 29 August, SAPS PE officers arrested two suspects in a container in Paarl Street, Greenfields, where R340k abalone was found and confiscated in a search.
The SAPS said in a statement that about 2 pm on Friday SAPS Kwazakele police officers followed up on info received, and on the way to Meke Street at Paarl Street, Greenfields, they noticed a group of people running in different directions from a container. The police found two suspects in the container and 20 bags of abalone containing 338.3 k of wet abalone
The two suspects, 31 and 35 years of age, will appear in New Brighton Magistrate’s Court on 1 September. They were detained on charges of contravention the Marine Living Resource Act, 19 of 1998 Regulation 36 sub sect 1 – illegal possession of abalone and illegal Immigrant contravening Section 9(1) of Act 13/2002.
Nelson Mandela Bay District Commissioner, Major General Vuyisile Ncata, again stressed that illegal abalone activities are a huge concern. He commended the SAPS members for their alertness in arresting the suspects. “The poaching of these molluscs can have a significant negative impact on the endangered species, so efforts to apprehend those involved is crucial.
“By apprehending abalone poachers, our officials are not only upholding the law but are also sending a strong message that illegal activities like this will not be tolerated,” Maj Gen Ncata warned.
