31 July: A total of 64 dredging pipes, 15m in length, are expected to be delivered alongside Ralph Road today, 31 July, in preparation for the St Francis Bay Property Association ‘s long term coastal protection system.
According to the Association’s plan sand will be dredged from the Sand River delta, and other priority areas on the Kromme river, to points along the beachfront extending up to Main Beach for beach nourishment.
The drop-off zone of the pipes will be in the area between Lara Road and where Ralph Road slides, away from the beach, heading north.
The final dredging pipeline will use pipes ranging from 15- 90 m and the pipes will be assembled on site where welding will take place over a 6-week period.
In a third phase pipes from 15-90m will be moved, placed and joined together in the final location. They will be assembled on site.
The dredging process will start about three months after initial placement of pipes and Miller Engineered Solutions has been appointed as contractor for the dredging.
On 29 July the SFPO announced by that a 3.5-metre-wide temporary access road along the crest of the St Francis spit will be created. It will be a dedicated service corridor top enable construction machinery to access multiple points along the beach for the purposes of the SFPO’s chosen groyne system, approved by Eastern Cape province, for the restoration of the beach
Two public mooring points located on the inner side of the ski boat canal to enable beach access over the spit will be temporarily removed. Thee access points intersect with the construction corridor and be part of active construction zone.
