The bail hearing of Rob Evans, the accused in the tragic death of Vanessa van Rensburg, 36, whose lifeless body was found on Easter Sunday this year, is expected to continue in the Humansdorp regional Court this morning.
The court was told on 3 June that the highly affluent Evans earns around R7 million a month through his Algoa Plastics business he runs with his brother.
Evans was in court for the ninth day yesterday. He is currently being held in St Albans prison to await the outcome of his bail hearing. He faces charges of murder, attempted murder, kidnapping, and obstructing justice
Yesterday, 4 June, it was Xolile Kato, the seasoned SAPS detective, who was questioned intensely by Evans’ attorney Paul Roelofse, in the Humansdorp regional Court. In his cross examination Roelofse questioned evidence given by Kato so far.
Roelofse wished to know when Evans had become a suspect. Evans was only arrested on 9 May and not immediately following the discovery of Vanessa’s body on 20 April.
Kato said Evans became a suspect when investigations revealed that only he and Vanessa were on the property that night, and the pair had argued. Plus, the severe wounds on her body and the fact that Evans gave three different, contradictory accounts of what transpired at the Oyster Bay holiday home that night.
Kato believes the State has a strong case against Evans and that the accused faces life imprisonment if convicted of the alleged crimes. With his wealth, he posed a flight risk.
A relaxed Evans was in court and was supported by the presence of his brother and two daughters, who were also in court. He returned to St Albans yesterday afternoon, and he is expected to be back in court this morning for the continuation of his bail hearing.
