Court hears wealthy Evans could be flight risk

Yesterday, 3 June: Gqeberha businessman Rob Evans, 58, earns around R7-million monthly and this poses a flight risk, the Humansdorp Regional court was told yesterday, 3 June, by a seasoned SAPS detective investigating the murder case of Vanessa Van Rensburg, who was also from PE.

The State is opposing bail against Evans who is currently being held in St Albans prison since his arrest on 9 May.

“If he paid bail of R100,000 and knows he faces two life terms, he might be a flight risk…. he has all the means to do so… with that money he can do what he wants,” SAPS Warrant Officer, Xolile Kato, told the court.

Kato was giving reasons why the State is opposing bail against Evans,  who is currently being held in St Albans prison since his arrest on 9 May.

Kato also said the charges against Evans, charges of murder, attempted murder, kidnapping, and obstructing justice, were serious and if convicted Evans faced life imprisonment.    Kato was responding to State prosecutor, Bianca Burger’s question why Evans should not be granted bail.

Advocate Paul Roelofse, who is leading Evans’ defence in court, however, questioned the credibility of the  investigation.

During yesterday’s hearing a school teacher also described to the court the effect of the Vanessa’s death on her daughter. Previously an energetic and cheerful girl she had now become withdrawn and was suffering from trauma. This was a sombre moment in in the court’s proceedings as the tragic effects of the Vanessa’s death on her whole family were felt by those in court yesterday.

The proceedings were delayed owing to a power failure. Yesterday’s bail hearing, in its 8th day,  was adjourned until today, 4 June, when new evidence  for opposing or for granting bail  are anticipated.

St Francis Chronicle first reported Vanessa’s death on April 21, 2025, in Oyster Bay, 16 km from St Francis. Evans faces murder and kidnapping charges. This is a developing story. Follow @stfranchronicle for updates.
