NSRI Port Elizabeth volunteers evacuated a man off the Umzamo chokka fishing boat yesterday evening .
The 39 year-old crewman, from Humansdorp was reported to be coughing up blood (Haemoptysis).
Ian Gray, NSRI Port Elizabeth station commander, said at 5 pm on 14 April, Port Elizabeth volunteer sea rescue duty crew were activated following a request for medical assistance from Umzamo, 15 nautical miles South West of Port Elizabeth.
“Initially NSRI St Francis Bay had responded on the call but after it was determined that the vessel was closer to Port Elizabeth then NSRI Port Elizabeth were activated.
“Our NSRI Port Elizabeth volunteer sea rescue duty crew launched our sea rescue craft Spirit of Toft and responded. The crewman was transferred onto our sea rescue craft in a stable condition. He was brought to Port Elizabeth Port where he was handed into the care of EC Government Health Emergency Medical Services (EMS) paramedics and transported to hospital by EMS ambulance for further treatment.”
