NSRI Gordons Bay volunteer sea rescue duty crew today (15 April) found the body of a 29 year-old man in his wrecked vehicle on the coastal road between Gordon’s Bay and Kleinmond.
The man had been travelling along this road, known as the R44, to Cape Town on Saturday, 13 April, but never arrived at his destination that evening. The man’s family reported him as missing to the SAP.
Fearing that his vehicle may have left the coastal road between Kleinmond and Gordons Bay in a possible accident, a lady family member appealed to NSRI to search along that section of the road. She said her cousin planned to drive the R44 coastal road from the Arabella Golf Estate to Cape Town, via Gordons Bay, but failed to arrive in Cape Town as scheduled on Saturday evening. He had left the Arabella Golf Estate at 3 pm on Saturday.
NSRI Gordons Bay volunteer sea rescue duty crew were activated at 4.45 pm today. The volunteer duty crew launched their sea rescue craft and began searching along the cliffs below the R44 roadway from the sea side. At Dappe Se Gat, in the vicinity of Koeel Bay, about half way between Gordons Bay and Rooi Els, NSRI rescuers came across the wrecked vehicle.
An NSRI Gordons Bay rescue swimmer went ashore off the rescue craft to investigate and discovered the man’s body in the wreck. The body was recovered and handed over to the Forensic Pathology Services.
Family members are being supported by police trauma counsellors. Police have opened an inquest docket.
