The City of Cape Town Disaster Risk Management have just reported this morning, 25 March 2013, that three of the five whales released into False Bay late yesterday afternoon were found beached on Long Beach, Simonstown, at 11.30 last night.
The three beached whales were found to be in poor and deteriorating health and were euthanised. Twenty Pilot whales were found washed up on Noordhoek Beach yesterday and only six initially survived.
Veterinary Surgeons, the Department of Environmental Affairs – Oceans and Coasts, the SPCA and the City of Cape Town Disaster Risk Management responded and are confident that these three whales were among the five that were released into False Bay late yesterday afternoon.
At approximately 2. 30 am today under the guidance of the Department of Environmental Affairs – Oceans and Coasts marine scientists and the SPCA humanely euthanised the whales.
The False Bay coastline is being monitored by the authorities in case the other two released whales also beach again.
