There was jubilation yesterday as several of our Eastern Province surfers went through to the semis in the Hurley SA Junior Champs yesterday (Saturday, 6 October).
With perfect 1.5 metre waves, there were spectacular rides and some stirring victories from all provinces. There were also upsets as all six age groups were whittled down to the semi-finalists in preparation for today’s final day when individual and team champions will be announced.
Some Eastern Province members fared very well in the surf yesterday, In the girls’ U15 division Crystal Hulett won her Round 3 heat with a fine performance in the pristine morning conditions and went through to the semis.
Matt McGillivray (EP) racked up a win and his EP teammates Tim Baard and Jerry van Wykare are with him in the last eight. In the U13 boys Jose Faulkner (EP) is also in the semis.
Today’s schedule (7 October) starts with the girls and then the boys semi-finals followed by the Red Bull Airshow and then the six finals. The awards ceremony is at 4 pm at the beach (The Point)
The top surfer of the event will take home the Hurley Surfer of the Contest title. Then
There are also the Zigzag Blowing Up Award and R3 000 for the surfer producing the most impressive performances during the event, the Skullcandy Team Spirit award for the provincial team displaying the best camaraderie and support for their teammates and the Citroën Highest Heat Score title that honours the surfer who posts the biggest heat tally across all divisions throughout the entire five day event with a R3 000 payout.
