St Francis Bay’s Crystal Hulett will be among several highly talented surfers who will be surfing in the Hurley SA Junior Champs which gets underway in the iconic waves of Jeffreys Bay on Wednesday and runs until Sunday.
Another youngster from St Francis Bay, Josh Chips, will also be participating in the U17 category of the Hurley Champs in JBay. Some of Eastern Province’s top surfers will be there, including 2011 finalists Tahra Uhren, Kai Woolf, Matt McGillivray (U15 boys) and Jose Faulkner (U13 boys), but they face strong challenges from the defending champions and the likes of McGillivray’s SA national teammates Benji Brand and Max Armstrong (both WP), Steffen Burrows (Boland), Nicole Pallet (KZNC) and Chanelle Botha (SKZN).
Excitement is building among the country’s top young surfers for this competition. A delighted Crystal told St Francis Chronicle that she was thrilled to be participating and that it will be fantastic experience.
Scheduled for 3-7 October, this premier Surfing South Africa (SSA) event features the best 17-and-under surfers selected by respective provincial associations. It will be staged at the high performance surf break known as The Point for the first time in its 16 year history.
Competitors from defending team champions Western Province and the hosts, Eastern Province, will be joined by squads from KZN Central, Southern KZN, Border, Boland, Zululand, Southern Cape and the SA Development Academy in bid to win the Freedom Cup and SA titles in Under 17, U15 and U13 categories for boys and girls.
Outstanding conditions are forecast for this championship, one of the most important junior tournaments on the South African calendar. Hurley’s support and commitment has turned it into a 5-star event, Robin de Kock, GM of Surfing South Africa (SSA) says.
Competitors selected by nine provincial associations will be competing for individual SA junior titles in Under 17, U15 and U13 categories for boys and girls and the team accumulating the highest points tally will take home the coveted Freedom Cup.
The 2012 Hurley SA Junior Champs is supported by Citroën Port Elizabeth, Skullcandy, Red Bull, Zigzag and All Aboard Travel.
