South African surfers eliminated at World Junior Champs
A sad day for South Africa as the country’s top junior surfers were eliminated today at the SA Junior Champs in Bali. In a tight Round 4 battle , St Francis Bay’s Dale Staples was eliminated by Conner Coffin, US.
“That was a really close heat,” Coffin said. “I wasn’t quite surfing my best and needed a little bit of luck. At the end I caught a good wave and Dale fell on his last one, a couple things went my way and it was enough to get through.”
Staples, last years’ s Oakley World Pro Junior runner-up was one of three remaining South Africans who were defeated this morning. Beyrick De Vries (ZAF) in Round 4 was taken out by Davey Cathels (AUS) who stormed into the Quarter finals. Then despite a last minute attempt to claw back the lead, Shaun Joubert fell a few points short of taking the round that was won by Vasco Ribeiro (PRT)
The Oakley World Pro Junior Bali at Echo Beach, Canggu took advantage of the consistent swell and offshore winds. Competition heated up as competitors left in the event get closer to the Final and the lead in the ASP World Junior Title Race.
Other results today include:
* Eziekel Lau (HAW) the big man fromHawaiiended Darmaputra Tonjo’s (IND), deadly run in Round 4. Lau unleashed huge power gouges and a massive alley-oop to take the win and will now face Garrett Parkes (AUS) in Quarterfinal 2.
“I watched Darmaputra’s (aka the Balinese giant killer) Round 3 Heat closely and I noticed he was on all the best waves,” Lau said. “So my plan was to do that in my heat and it worked. I wanted to get a good start so I used my power surfing, then when I had some scores I threw up that Hail Mary air and I landed it.”
* Peterson Crisanto (BRA) amassed the highest heat total of the men’s event so far – 18.00 (out of a possible 20). The young Brazilian attacked every section with style and flair, mixing carving turns with aerial antics, leaving jaws agape with the height and variety of his aerial repertoir.
* Sarah Mason (NZL), the 16-year-old fromNew Zealandwas the first woman to progress to the Quarterfinals after defeating Gabriela Leite (BRA) in Round 3 of the women’s event that was called on after the completion the Men’s Round 4.
The event was called off after the first 4 Heats of the Women’s Round 3. A call will be made at Canggu at 6:30am for a possible 7am start.
